Seven Athletes with Tenri University Ties to Compete in the London Olympics

Seven athletes with ties to Tenri University will be competing in the 2012 London Olympics, which will begin on July 27. Three others from Tenri U. will serve as either coaches or referees.

Judo

Among them, Takamasa Anai is expected to draw the most attention, as he will be competing in the judo 100 kg weight division. First round competition in this weight division is slated to begin on August 2.

Women’s Field Hockey

Six of Japan’s Women’s 16-member field hockey team has Tenri University ties, a feat tied with Yamanashi Gakuin University. They are:

Japan is in Pool A of the Women’s Field Hockey Tournament at the Olympics. Their schedule is as follows:

  • July 29, 2012, 19:00 Match A3 vs. Great Britain
  • August 2, 2012, 08:30 Match A7 vs. South Korea
  • August 4, 2012, 13:45 Match A11 vs. Belgium
  • August 6, 2012, 13:45 Match A13 vs. China

Other

In other Olympics news, Toshiyuki Tanaka of Riding Club Crane and a citizen of Tenri City will also compete as a part of Japan’s Equestrian/Eventing Team. Competition is slated to begin on July 28.

Kento Masaki, another alumnus of Tenri University, was named as a candidate to the London 2012 Paralympic Games in the 100+ kg weight division in judo. Competition is slated to begin on August 30 and end on September 1.
